“Turf Unity: Rebuilding the Hood”
June 20th – August 25th, 2011 (on Mondays & Wednesday from 2-6pm)
United Roots, Oakland’s Peapod Adobe Youth Voice Academy, is launching a project-based training this Summer open to youth ages 16-24. Students in the class will have the opportunity to participate in a Turf Unity media project, and create music, short films, graphic designs and music videos that will advocate for social, environmental and economic justice. Turf Unity is about people from neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area, specifically ones in the flatlands (turfs), coming together to do projects that tell the true story about what is happening in the community, promote alliances between community groups and create some opportunities that can help folks generate resources for their neighborhoods. Students in the program will have the opportunity to share media projects from the program at Turf Unity community events being held this summer in partnership with the Urban Peace Movement organization (for more info about events go to: www.urbanpeacemovement.org).
In the class students will learn:
- music production, including beat making, lyric writing and audio recording
- video production: making short films and music videos
- graphic design: for promotional materials and possibly T-shirt’s
Note: Students in the program may focus on one specific art form (for example, choose to focus on video production) and break up in to small groups to complete each project.
