My name is D’Juan Ewing-Smalls. I’m 23 years old. I was born and raised in Sacramento, and now I call Oakland home. I attend Laney College majoring in psychology and music production. I am a music producer known as KOD which stands for Knowledge Over Destruction. I specialize in Hip-Hop, Trap, and R&B beats. The value of my business is to offer artists a canvas to express their stories through music with my beats, and also to help other artists find like-minded music to share. My beats have been purchased by local artists as well as artists all around the U.S. In addition to selling my beats, I also collaborate with many local artists in the Bay Area and all over California.
I have always loved music. Listening to music helps me to relate to others, puts me in a certain mood, and also transforms me to express myself. It was during a high school after school program where I first learned how to create beats that sparked a new found love for music and passion. The program was run by Gerald Keys, or Keys for short. In this program, he taught us how to create instrumentals and how to record songs for artists. In addition to learning more about music, we were also taught a lot about the music business including how to navigate this field. The program helped me discover that creating beats is not only a form of creative expression but that I can turn this new passion into a business. My business also has a social enterprise element; I want to share creating music with others as Keys did with me. I plan to do this by reaching out to other younger producers, mentoring them, and paying it forward through educating and collaboration by giving back to my community. This also keeps my passion burning. Eventually, I would like to open my own studio and offer young producers a place to work, collaborate, and grow in their art.
If you or anyone you know is interested in collaboration, have a studio space available for use, or any equipment you’d like to donate, please reach out to me at my email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have suggestions or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to collaborating with you soon. Please follow me on all platforms @kodbeats.
