Hack the Hood, a program in partnership with United Roots, just won the Google Impact Challenge, receiving $500,000 to expand the Hack the Hood program to the entire Bay Area. Hack the Hood provides technical training in multimedia and tech skills to youth who will then apply their learning through real-world consulting projects with locally-owned businesses and non-profits. So far Hack the Hood has been a 6-week program at United Roots that happens every summer.
Hack the Hood will be at United Roots this summer – a 6 week summer camp from July 9th through August 15th from 9am-5pm on weekdays. Young people will be taught web design, entrepreneurship and much more – and get paid a monthly stipend for building websites for local businesses. If you are a young person living in Oakland between the ages 16-21 who is interested in a career in the technology industry, please apply for Hack the Hood today: http://www.hackthehood.org/home/were-accepting-youth-applications-for-oaklands-summer-2014-bootcamp
United Roots is also gearing up to launch a new initiative called Youth HUB, a partnership with Impact HUB Oakland and Youth SEED. The Youth HUB is a place where youth from programs like Hack the Hood can launch tech-based social enterprises, utilizing the co-working office space United Roots has to offer.
Thanks everyone that voted for Hack the Hood and helped us win the Google Impact Challenge, we couldn’t have done it without you.
