United Roots supports youth in becoming active participants in creating positive social change in their communities. Youth are supported in increasing their civic engagement and actively creating equitable solutions to the problems they identify as most pressing. We provide opportunities for these youth to develop marketable skills while leading change in their communities.
- In 2009, United Roots became the first “green” youth center in Oakland, and we established a community organization that incubates programs and projects for young people of color in Oakland
- In 2013, we started the first Youth Impact Hub in the world in partnership with Impact Hub Oakland, which has launched over 50 youth-led enterprises and houses youth-led businesses of Oakland’s Emerging 100, a partnership with the City of Oakland and Youth Business USA.
- We have our own youth-led Media Company (UR Media), which employs over 30 youth a year, and core programs at United Roots include DetermiNation, UR Media Training and the Youth Hub Fellowship.
- United Roots also houses and fiscally sponsors Gameheads, whose programmatic goal is to prepare low income youth and youth of color for a career in the tech and video game industry.
United Roots has a core youth membership of 200 youth and engages up to 1,000 youth a year in events, community projects & campaigns. We have engaged over 5,000 youth since opening in 2009.
