United Roots Graphic Design Interns Release Poster Series on Oppression & Liberation
United Roots graphic design interns from MetWest High School, Marisol Zepeda, Jessica Valdez and Sony Nguyen, recently produced a poster series on the theme of Liberation showcasing community heroes, social movements and thought provoking concepts. The posters were created in the United Roots graphic design internship program in January 2012. United Roots partners with various Oakland High Schools to offer internship opportunities to students as part of their schooling experience. These student interns get to choose a media arts field to do an apprenticeship style learning project, matched up with a United Roots staff mentor, and work on projects relevant to the things they are doing in school while getting high school credit. The graphic design interns from MetWest High School decided to do a group project on the theme of oppression and liberation, because it was connected to things they were learning about at their High School. The project they started became a poster series that they can showcase as a gallery, at both MetWest High School and United Roots’ community center.
