On November 2nd, 2011, Occupy Oakland organized a general strike in Oakland. Thousands of people participated in the city wide event, including labor organizers and union members, city officials, school teachers and students, local artists, spiritual groups and community organizations. The rally was held at the Oakland Civic Center (Frank Ogawa Plaza at 14th St. & Broadway Avenue). At the end of the rally tens of thousands of people marched to the Port of Oakland in solidarity with the Oakland longshoremen and union organizers participating in the strike. This United Roots video report has clips that highlight various aspects of this event, including the rally and march, and showcases a stage United Roots set up at the event downtown. DJ Twelvz from United Roots coordinated this stage with Bay Area DJ’s Fuse and Sake1. The stage was set up so that youth from Oakland would have a designated place to speak out at Occupy Oakland and an opportunity to perform music and poetry related to the event. A more thorough documentary about Occupy Oakland with interviews with youth will be released in December.
